dual trip 2019
MCLAUGHLIN & Wakpala, SD
Coming off its inaugural trip in 2018, we could not possibly do round two on McLaughlin VS Wakpala. Two groups, two communities, two VBS's - double the work projects, double the outreach, double the impact in one week. With two groups of 25+, this trip is sure to filled with crowded bus rides and sparse alone time, but also filled with new friendships, exciting competitions, powerful worship, and many memories.
Both groups will travel up together to their separate sites in McLaughlin and Wakpala - roughly 20 miles apart - and begin work projects, VBS, and outreach in their respective communities. Their main focus will remain in their community for much of the week. However in some of the mornings and evenings, our groups will collide, offering our worship through praise, mass, testimonies, sharing, and more.
Plagued by drug and alcohol abuse much of the reservation much of individuals have resulted in an array of issues including abuse, neglect, and suicide. We strive to impact the community in three ways:
Socially through building relationships with the youth.
Physically through meaningful work projects that help families and children.
Spiritually through the relationships built and bridging the gap between God and individuals who may be unaware of their salvation.
We have proven strategies of succeeding in these three areas through years of experience, prayer, and expert opinions and research.
We ask you to prayerfully consider the nature of this trip before signing up. Although very similar to our classic trips, there will be times that we do things much differently than "normal."
July 7th – July 13th
Travel to and from the Reservation and during the trip will take place in our Evangeletes bus. The drivers are properly CDL certified through the state of IL and have years of experience in driving to, from, and on the reservation. We will also be driving 15 passenger vans and possibly a truck. No one will drive longer than 6-hour shifts during the trips up and back.
All participants of the dual trip will be staing at either St. Bernard's Parish in McLaughlin, SD or Wakpala Public School in Wakpala, SD. Both facilities are clean, safe, and equipped with A/C.
In McLaughlin, students will sleep on gender specific floors of the building. The church has multiple bathrooms and two showers for each gender.
In Wakpala, students sleep on separate sides of a gymnasium with a curtain down the middle, effectively separating the two genders. There are several bathrooms with a gender specific locker room for showers. Showers are open "locker-room" style showers so please plan accordingly.
All doors to the facilities will be locked at all times and no one will be allowed outside after dark for safety precautions.
We strive to positively impact the communities we serve, this means focusing on meaningful work projects. We do not assign our students to tedious tasks such as mowing lawns or pulling weeds. All students will serve as an important piece of a greater effort to help develop areas of Standing Rock.
This includes but is not limited to:
Building of handicap ramps and decks
Sheetrock and drywall repairs
Building of handicap accessible showers
Exterior and interior painting jobs
All of our projects are prayerfully discussed and chosen with the help of community leaders. This ensures that our projects are a part of a greater effort to positively impact Standing Rock.
